Has Saving Mr. Banks renewed your interest in the classic Disney movie Mary Poppins? Invite friends and family over to celebrate this film with a tea party based movie night.

As guests arrive have them decorate your sidewalk or porch with their chalk drawings masterpieces. To further get in the mood they can make a kite magnet. Pre cut foam board into kite shapes and supply lots of paper and sparkle and bling and let creativity run free.

For refreshments, provide classic tea party treats, with a Poppins twist (recipes to follow).

I prepared Jolly Holiday Cranberry Citrus Scones with mock clotted cream, fruit kebobs with the picks decorated with umbrella cut outs, Spoonful of Sugar Cake Pops and Practically Perfect Peach Punch.

I printed out the song lyrics to Let’s Go Fly A Kite for a sing along during the movie and to take home, along with the kite magnets, bird seed tied up in net.  Feed the Birds was Walt Disney’s favorite song, so this is an appropriate reminder of all he went through to bring us this masterpiece.

Recipes:

Spoonful of Sugar Cake Pops: I used lemon poppy seed cake and lemon icing or the pops, dipped in coating and sprinkles and placed on antique spoons.

Practically Perfect Peach Punch: 1 quart of lemonade mixed with a can of peach nectar. Add frozen sliced peaches and mint before serving.

Jolly Holiday Cranberry Citrus Scones:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup cold butter, cubed
  • ½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk with a bit of vinegar added to curdle)
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
  • 1 teaspoon lemon extract
  • ¾ cup craisins

Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Combine the remaining ingredients and stir until crumb mixture is moistened. Turn onto floured surface and knead gently 5-6 times. Pat into 6 circles and transfer to greased baking sheets. Cut each circle into 8 wedges but do not separate. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on wire rack.

Mock Clotted Cream:

Place 1/3 cup sour cream in a coffee filter, cover with plastic wrap, having wrap touch surface of sour cream. Allow to sit in refrigerator overnight to drain off liquid. The next day combine sour cream with 1 cup of Cool Whip.
